Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
We've been in business since 1985.
What is your primary product or service?
We handthrow and handform unique stoneware & porcelain dinnerware, serving pieces, & flower containers.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I made my first handthrown pot in 1972 as a teenager in High School. By the time I left high school I had set up a studio in my parents' house with a wheel & kiln, was producing my own line of work and selling it. While at the University of Maryland, I studied other kinds of kilnfiring as well as getting a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture, which I saw as my avocation (still love plants which shows in my work) while still pursuing studies in ceramics and briefly working as a thrower for a production studio. By 1978, I had completed a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics with Antioch University where I was invited to teach upon graduation, working there until 1984 at which time I purchased my current property, which was 6 acres of grass with a barn on it. We built the house & studio (renovating the barn) simultaneously and were producing work for sale by mid 1986. Continued renovations have resulted in expanded work areas as well as an indoor sales gallery.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Our work is unique in style, clay & glaze surfaces. We advertise thru having our work in restaurants, coffee shops & B&B where customers can test drive our pottery. We are also deeply committed to our mission as a social enterprise, in which we donate 10% of all sales income to both local & international charities which promote Environmental education & awareness for both kids & adults, and provide food, education & training towards self-reliance for folks who are under resourced.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We are situated at one location in Dayton, MD (central Howard County) but are discussing the feasibility of setting up an artisan factory & gift shop gallery coupled with a coffee shop in a local county location where we can provide food, jobs & hope for the homeless, especially teens.
