Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Established 1995.
What is your primary product or service?
Anderson Materials Evaluation, Inc. offers a broad spectrum of materials analytical services to help you shoulder the burdens of materials development and characterization, process and product development, quality control, and failure analysis. We also provide research, consultative, and expert witness services. We collaborate with you to help develop goal-directed solutions to your metal, semiconductor, glass, polymer, inorganic and organic chemical, ceramic, composite, mineral, and contaminant material problems.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I performed surface analysis and other materials characterizations and problem solving for the Dept. of the Navy for ten years and then similar materials analytical and problem solving work for Lockheed Martin for six years. When the Lockheed Martin Baltimore Laboratory was closed I bought up a considerable amount of laboratory equipment and opened my own materials analysis laboratory. Before my joining the Dept. of the Navy, I earned a Ph.D. in materials physics from Case Western Reserve University and held a post-doctoral fellowship there.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We are the only commercial materials analysis laboratory in the Baltimore-Washington Metro Area offering many of the materials analysis services that we offer, such as X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy surface analysis. We are staffed by three Ph.D. scientists and are unusually capable in solving materials problems. Rather than being a commodity laboratory, we are the laboratory customers need to go to for their more complex materials problems.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have one laboratory. We moved into a 50% larger laboratory in February 2011.
Provide detailed directions to your location
We are located on Red Branch Road which starts on Old Annapolis Road (MD Rt. 108) a short distance east of US 29 and loops north around and back to Old Annapolis Road further to the east. The west intersection of Red Branch Road with Old Annapolis Road has a stop light. We are closer to the eastern end which does not have a stop light. This eastern end of Red Branch Road is just west of the intersection of Centre Park Drive and Phelps Luck Drive with Old Annapolis Road, where a small shopping area is located on the north side of Old Annapolis Road.
What type of payments do you accept?
2%10 Net 30 and VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover Cards.
Which areas do you service?
Mostly North America, but we get occasional projects from Australia, Asia, South America, and the Middle East.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Dr. Charles R. Anderson is the founder and principal owner. He is also the President and Principal Scientist. Dr. Lorrie A. Krebs is also an owner and she is Vice President and Senior Scientist. Dr. Kevin A. Wepasnick is a Project Manager.
What are your hours of operation?
Nominally 0930 hours to 2130 hours. Since we have virtually no walk-in traffic, we meet with clients almost exclusively by appointment.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
You have made our business more productive.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
"Progress is only made when fear is overcome by curiosity. If you are curious enough, you will not have any fear."
William S. Knudsen
