Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Bob's was started in 1981 in the basement of my home which was located in Wheaton, Maryland. We done a great deal of growing since then and assisted tens of thousands of people around this region, the country and to a smaller degree the world have a heck of a lot of fun on and with motorcycles.
What is your primary product or service?
We sell FUN and so everything related to the enjoyment of motorcycling from collecting to riding with a speciaity in BMW products. Bob's sells new and used BMW and all other brands of motorcycles on a used basis. We service BMW's as far back as 1950 and stock and supply every part necessary for the ownership of that same age range. We offer an extensive range of accessories for all types of riders and have the region's best selection of riding gear for year-round pleasure to suit all riders in all budget ranges.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I call it a hobby run amuck. I started as just a BMW motorcycle enthusiast in 1975 while I was a professional photographer and working in the retail end of the photo business as well as other entreprenurial enterprises. The original business, started in my basement in 1981, was called Bob's Used Parts and dealt with recycled parts, accessories and liquidated dealer inventories as the main offerings. In short order I was buying high demand items in Germany and importing them to fulfill demand. I then started buying wholesale in the US from existing BMW dealers to acquire a greater depth of new inventory as almost no BMW dealers did mail order and that was 95% of what I did. I brought back rare items, high demand parts and whole motorcycles from Europe acquired at flea markets and hunting down collections around the country. As some used machines were too nice to break down, I got a used motorcycle dealers license and began refurbishing some of better used bikes vs. parting them out. Offering some minor services for customers followed and then I acquired the area's best independent service operation specializing in BMWs at that time. In 1990 I gave in to pressure from BMW of North America and existing customers and Bob's Used Parts became Bob's BMW in 1991, offering new bike sales and full warranty service on and for the new motorcycles along with used ones. We became a Authorized Maryland Motorcycle and Trailer Inspection facility. Since that time almost 20 years ago we have almost always been in the Top 10 Rankings for new bike sales and frequently number one in the sale of parts, accessories, riding gear and Customer Service, winning numerous industry and Small Business Administration and local business awards.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Our tag line says it all: The team effort at Bob's is to deliver the Ultimate Motorcycling Experience every time!
We strive to out service every other business that our clients may be exposed to including those unrelated to motorcycles so that we are known as the standard by which others are measured. This business is about Adult Toys so our job is to make it fun, deliver unequaled value and be here every time our customers need advice, service or just a suggestion of where to go riding this weekend or for an extended tour in the US or abroad.
Making this business fun for ourselves and our customers extends into having the only Vintage Motorcycle Museum (BMW is of course the focus) on the east coast that is open to the public 6 days a week and is free of charge.
Bob's also participates in and attends many motorcycle events around the region and country and has helped organize others including tours in Europe. Bob's has helped promote, organize and generate substantial fundraising for several local and national charitable foundations including Susan G. Komen, National Kidney, Crohns and Colitis, ARC of Howard County, Special Olympics and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation who recognized Bob's BMW as the Top Fundraiser in the nation several times.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Currently just one. We were approved by BMW to open a second location in Northern Virginia but pulled the plug due to real estate costs. We are currently working on a new and larger facility nearby that would offer more space under roof, the addition of a restaurant and or coffee shop, some complimentary retail businesses, possibly some meeting and conference space, and expanded museum and a larger parking lot for events.
Provide detailed directions to your location
Bob's is easy to get to from everwhere and is located halfway between Baltimore and Washington.
From I-95 Take exit #38A onto Route 32 East (Fort Meade)
Travel one (1) mile and exit onto Route 1 North (Elkridge)
Turn right at the 2nd traffic light onto Guilford Road
Travel about 3/4 mile to Bob's BMW on the right side.
What type of payments do you accept?
Bob's accepts all major forms of financial payment: VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, Bank Checks, pre-approved personal checks, wire transfers and offers very competitive financing. We also take virtually anything of value in trade that a customer might own and wish to part with.
Which areas do you service?
Bob's offers service to customers in all 50 states and every country around the world because of the extensive mail order and e-commerce operation. Customers literally purchase new and used bikes and ride home to other states every year. We are able to ship some bikes at the customers direction. However most of our motorcycle sales and service is targeted towards those living within a 100 mile radius of Columbia, Maryland so that we can offer them the highest levels of customer service. We have 3 dedicated motorcycle transporters that can pick up and deliver clients' motorcycles 24/7 year round as well.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Bob's BMW is owned by Bob and Suzanne Henig; we are here 5 or more days per week with the exception of our own motorcycling adventures which can take us almost anywhere in the US or the world. We have four excellent department managers (bike sales, service, parts-accessories & apparel, advertising) who run things in our absence.
What are your hours of operation?
Open Monday through Saturday starting at 9:00 am sharp and often earlier. We close at 6:00 pm M-F and at 4:00 PM on Saturday. With the rare exception of a special event, we are closed on Sundays to squeeze in even more riding time.Even with all the professional services and products we offer we still are motorcyclists at heart and want to be out riding.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
A personal referral or introduction to a new customer. When actually bringing that person to Bob's and introducing them to the staff, the dealership as a whole and even Bob it's even more rewarding. In the end we want every single customer to be an Ambassador for Bob's like we try to be an Ambassador for motorcycling as a whole.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
Sorry, no bible verses from me. However I like several quotes but these are two of my favorites, the first one is mine, created while riding cross country to visit my father in 2011; the second has circulated for a long time and is anonymous as best i know and gets altered a little by all who share it, me included.
If your dreams don't scare you at least a little then they're just not big enough.
The purpose of life’s journey is not to arrive at the grave with a well-preserved body, but rather to Slide in Sideways, completely used up, worn out and rather rough looking yelling and screaming, what a ride!
